you guys have any tips for taking exhaust videos with my potato? I tried to do it earlier and it sounded worse than a fart can, and this dump sounds so much better than a fart can.
Edit: there's the video I got.

have you tried doing it from inside the car, as in a 2nd gear pull, and recording it?

by spending lots of money on high end sound gear.
Though, I second recording from inside the car, because it'll be better than outside the car. Or just do it from a distance, that would also work better.

Honestly, the galaxy phones are pretty good in the video department, but like all consumer electronics, they use electret microphones which are just known for being cheap, and "working."
For something like this, you really want a dynamic mic, because it can take a beating, but you're getting into expensive stuff by then. Condenser mics would inappropriate, but if you kept the gain down, it would work, but only an omni/shotgun style, to prevent damage. I have a video rig, and there's a great tunnel by me that I'll get my CAI sound in. I just need to get my friend to have some time to help me (because he knows how to work the camera, and I trust him with it).

And now I understand the dumbfounded look my friends get when I talk to them about cars. So basically I have to spend money to get decent audio?

like your car, you just need to know what to spend money on i order to get the results youre looking for.
a simple zoom recorder might be the short term answer, and there are ones that do video, but going with one that only does audio like the H4n or something like it would give you the ability to get a better mic later.
in your case, just use your galaxy, and step back another 10 feet. You should get better results for free. I dont think you should go off spending a bunch of money on something you wont use much, or even enough to pay itself back.
